Blue Devils Lose Home Opener

MENOMONIE (October 30, 2009) – St. Norbert scored twice in the third period to give UW-Stout a 2-0 loss in the Blue Devils’ opener Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

In a battle of two national heavyweights, the Green Knights’ Adam Hammerbeck scored with about 10 minutes left in the third period, on an assist by Scott Pulak.

St. Norbert got an empty net goal with seven second left by Shane Wheeler to clinch the game.

The game was tight throughout the evening. The Knights put 15 shots on net in the first period, then 11 in the second period. Stout put seven shots on in the first period and nine in the second.

Blue Devil starter Nick Hopper (Fr, Culver City, Calif) went down with an injury late in the second period, and gave way to Tom Lescovich (Fr, Clifton Park, NY). Lescovich got a rude intro immediately into the game, but turned back both shots in the second.

Hammerbeck put the eventual game winning goal when he got Lescovich stretched out and put the puck through the five hole.

Hopper finished the night with 24 saves and Lescovich had 14 saves. The Knights’ BJ O’Brien had 21 saves.

The two teams will meet again Saturday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. at the Dunn County Ice Arena.  (Courtesy of Sports Information Department)

New Goaltenders Will Start Against SNC

Nick Hopper (Culver City, CA) will start against the St. Norbert Green Knights this Friday at the Dunn Co. Ice Palace.  Saturday night we will see goaltender Tom Lescovich (Clifton Park, NY) take the pipes against SNC in game 2 of the series.  Both returning goaltenders (Pischlar, Morgan)  are not in the plans to see any action this weekend.

“It looks like Hopper kind of has the inside track right now, but the [others] have been looking very good as well,” said Watkins. “If we can get anything close to what we had last year, I think we’ll be ok. I don’t know if we’ll be as good in goal as we were last year, but if we can get above average goaltending we’ll be fine.” (Via USCHO)

The Blue Devils are very deep this season all around.  Coach Watkins will likely be shifting line and plugging players in where he thinks he’ll have the best chance to win in that particular game or series.

Blue Devils Picked To Win NCHA

Saint Paul, Minn. (October 23, 2009) -  After grinding through the NCHA playoffs and reaching the NCAA Frozen Four last season, the UW-Stout Blue Devils have been pegged the favorite in 2009-10 by the coaches in their annual preseason poll. UW-Stout received five of the six first-place votes, with one going to St. Norbert.nchahockeylogo

The Blue Devils lose several players off last year’s roster, most notably goaltender Matt Koenig. But the core of their scoring punch is back, including the reigning conference point champion Derek Hanson (Bemidji, MN / Danville). Hanson racked up 45 points in 08-09 on 17 goals and 28 assists. He’s joined by fellow snipers Joel Gaulrapp (Owatonna, MN / Owatonna), who bagged 21 goals, and Scott Motz (Lake Elmo, MN / Tartan), who added 14 among 37 points.

Second in the poll was St. Norbert, followed closely by last year’s regular season champ UW-Superior. The Green Knights bring back All-American defenseman Nick Tabisz (Kettering, OH) to lead a team that nearly made the NCAA tournament last year. UW-Superior has a big hole to fill in the graduation of goalie Chad Beiswenger – last year’s NCHA player of the year – but it brings back two of its top three scorers.

NHL 10 Showcase Dominated By Tenders

Gamers converged on North Hall this morning to partake in the 2nd annual EA Sports NHL 10 Showcase Showdown.  Two clear favorites emerged as Mike Morgan (G) and Tom Lescovich (G) both won their first rounds convincingly.  Brandon Larson (D) is still in a best-of-three series battle with new UW-Stout hockey color commentator Dan Walenski.  That third game should make for one exciting finish.

Matt Kaskavitch (play-by-play) was knocked into the losers bracket along with Devils’ Advocate fan Caleb Sherman.  Their fates have yet to be fully determined.

Many tournament favorites were no-shows for the event including  Tony V (DA), Matt Morin (F) and Jared Britton (F).

The tournament is set to finish next weekend as schedules conflicted and the tournament had to be put on halt for the day.
