Devils To Play At Xcel Energy Center

The UW-Stout Blue Devils will have the chance of a lifetime in late January when they play in the Xcel Energy Center.  UW-Stout will face St. Olaf College on January 23rd, 2010 at 1:30 p.m.

In years past, games between the two schools have been at a neutral site.  The last two years brought the ‘College Hockey Showcase’ to Buffalo, MN as each team had one Buffalo, MN native on their roster.  A large cookout in the parking lot with plenty of community support in Buffalo, the College Hockey Showcase was a great success.  With both players now graduated, the series needed a new neutral site and what better place than the home of the Minnesota Wild (NHL).

January 23rd is a big day for hockey in Minnesota, it’s also Hockey Day Minnesota.  It’s unknown how much mention the match-up will receive on FSN’s coverage, either way it’s an exciting opportunity for everyone involved!

Keep checking back as we will have more information in the coming days.  You can also count on Stouthockey.com for coverage and content you wont find anywhere else while the team is at the Xcel Energy Center.

Q&A: Garrett Grimstad (F)

Garrett Grimstad playing prep at Century High School

Garrett Grimstad came to the Blue Devils from the Alexandria Blizzard of the NAHL, but that’s not where he began his junior career.

Garrett had a stand-out prep career at Century High School in Rochester, MN where in his senior season Grimstad netted 21G 47A for 68 points in just 31 games.  He was also all-conference, team leading scorer, team captain, team MVP and all-state honorable mention.  A laundry list, right?  He headed right for the USHL after his impressive prep career.  After a short time with the Green Bay Gamblers, Grimstad took a step back and re-evaluated his junior career options.

Former Century High teammate Joe Knoepke was heading back to the Blizzard for the 2007-2008 season after a 36-game stint in the USHL.  Grimstad seized the opportunity to re-unite with his former prep teammate.  Grimstad was an easy decision for the Alexandria coaching staff and made the team in 2007-2008.

During that season Grimstad had 10G and 25A for 35 points in 46 games.  He improved over the off-season and returned the next year racking up 11G and 31A for 42 points in 54 games.  It was this season where he caught the eye of UW-Stout head coach Terry Watkins.

During his years with Alexandria, Grimstad skated with two other freshmen Blue Devils.  Long-time friend Joe Knoepke and Sam Carr of Roseau H.S.  All three have been critical additions to the UW-Stout roster this season and have really shown great promise.

Grimstad is majoring in Applied Science.

Motz Earns WIAC Honors For 2nd Time

MENOMONIE (December 15, 2009) – For the second time this season, UW-Stout forward Scott Motz (Sr, Lake Elmo, Minn/Tartan) raked in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) hockey athlete of the week award.

Scott Motz

Motz finished the weekend in which UW-Stout swept UW-River Falls, 6-1, 6-5, by scoring two goals and three assists.

In the 6-1 win over the Falcons on Dec. 11, Motz had an assist to Joel Gaulrapp in the second period, then scored the only even strength goal of the game with less than three minutes left in the game.

In a wild 6-5 win the following night, Motz had a hand in the first two goals of the game, giving Gaulrapp an assist on the opening goal of the game, then getting a power play goal to open the second period and give UW-Stout a 2-0 lead. Motz assisted on a power play goal in the third period to give the Blue Devils a 5-4 advantage.

On the season, Motz is tied with Derek Hanson for the scoring lead with 18 points. Motz has seven goals and 11 assists. For his career, Motz is currently third on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list. Hanson has the lead with 133 career points, while Glen LaChapelle, who Hanson passed two weeks ago, had 128 points in his career from 1970-73. Motz currently has 121 career points (47 goals, 74 assists).

Motz was earlier the WIAC athlete of the week, November 24.

Blue Devil Mid-Season Review

It’s winter break and your Blue Devils are spread across North America in their respective home towns for some family time.  UW-Stout enters the break 6-5-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the NCHA.  UW-Stout has struggled the first half of this season in a few areas.

The most notable of these areas is the defensive zone.  The blue devils have had a hard time breaking out of their own zone, finding the open passing lanes and inevitably turning the puck over in their own zone.  Some of this can be attributed to the loss of Bobby Kuehl, a senior who sustained a devastating knee injury during the opening of the season against St. Norbert’s.  Kuehl was certainly the number one defenseman coming into the season.  Joe Beaudette and Ryan Sullivan have been seeing significant time because of Kuehl’s injury.  These young players will continue to get their feet wet as the season progresses.

Tom Lescovich came into the season slotted as the number two goaltender but has seen nearly all the minutes.  Lescovich has logged the most minutes than any other NCAA Div. III goaltender in the country.  Starting goaltender Nick Hopper went down in the second period of the season opener with an extensive groin injury.  Nick Hopper just returned to 100% health status in the last couple weeks.  The two goaltenders will battle for the starting position during the holiday break.  Don’t be surprised to see Tom Lescovich still get some time, he has certainly proven himself in that starting role.  Lescovich ended the first-half of the season with a .907% and a 3.21 GAA.  While those numbers may not be flashy, keep in mind he played the most minutes and saw the most shots per-game than any goaltender in the NCHA.

The Blue Devils have been plagued by many injuries, not just the ones noted above.  Junior forward Jared Britton has been out with a separated shoulder since the season opener, Mike Hartviksen was out for nearly all of the first half with a mild knee injury, he just returned to the line-up a few weeks ago.  Joe Knoepke was out until recent weeks with a re-aggravated shoulder injury, we’re just starting to see what he can do in his freshmen season.   Would-be sophomore Matt Morin is out all-season recovering from shoulder surgery.  Morin was on the USCHO freshmen all-star team last season.  Injuries have be rampant and the devils now have a chance to get healthy over the holiday’s.   We’ll just be starting to see what this squad is capable of in the second half of the season that starts January 8th against Augsburg College.

The Blue Devils finally looked in-sync on every line in their two-game series against UW-River Falls last weekend.  The team is finally beginning to get comfortable with each other.  It should be an exciting second half as the NCHA shaping to be a tight race with any team able to beat one-another on any given night.

NCHA Standings

Men’s Teams W L T Pts.
St. Norbert (10-2-1) 7 1 0 14
St. Scholastica (8-2-2) 5 1 2 12
UW-Stout (6-5-3) 4 3 3 11
UW-River Falls (7-5-1) 3 4 1 7
UW-Stevens Point (6-8) 3 7 0 6
UW-Superior (7-5-1) 2 5 1 5
UW-Eau Claire (3-7-3) 1 4 3 5

Some players have stepped up and made some huge contributions during this 2009-2010 season.  Here are some of the key players thus far:

Andy Sternberg

The senior and leader of this Blue Devil has made huge contributions this season.  He currently has 6G and 8A for 14 points.  He has almost eclipsed his total points from last season (19 pts) in just half the time.  The senior forward is a leader both on and off the ice.  Look for more production out of him as the season continues.

Branden Gay

Branden Gay was a junior transfer from Robert Morris (NCAA Div.I).  Now that he’s found his stride, Gay has turned into an apple machine leading the team in assists.  He has 1G and 9A so far this season.  He truly is a pivotal play-maker centering Stout’s second line.

Scott Motz

Scott Motz has been a superstar since first putting on a UW-Stout sweater.  Motz has had 30 or more points every season he has played at UW-Stout, including two above 35 points.  Motz leads the team in points currently and also has rung up 4 power-play goals.  He again is a huge key to UW-Stout’s scoring prowess on the first line with 7G and 11A (18 Pts) thus far in the season.  Motz will continue to be a play-maker alongside superstars Derek Hanson and Joel Gaulrapp.  Each member of Stout’s first line has above 15 points currently.

Other notable contributors:  Sam Carr, Garrett Grimstad

Devils’ Sweep Falcons In Wild Weekend

12RIVER FALLS (December 12, 2009)Joel Whited (So, Indianapolis, Ind) scored two goals, including the game winner in a wild UW-Stout 6-5 win at UW-River Falls Saturday at Hunt Arena.

The Blue Devils (6-5-3, 4-3-2) held an early lead, but needed to score three goals in the third period to notch the win and get the weekend sweep over the Falcons(7-5-1, 3-4-1). Stout had won Friday, 6-1.

Coming into the third period, the game was tied at 3-3, but the Falcons’ Justin Brossmann scored his second consecutive goal when he scored only 1:42 into the third stanza. Sam Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) and Derek Hanson (Sr, Bemidji, Minn) scored back-to-back goals to put Stout ahead, 5-4.

But the Falcons tied the score less than 30 seconds after Hanson’s goal.

But Whited wasted no time getting the game winning goal, taking a pass from Paul Henderson (Sr, Menomonie) only 14 seconds later.

Stout took a 2-0 lead when Joel Gaulrapp (Sr, Owatonna, Minn) scored in the first period and Scott Motz (Sr, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored early in the second period. But the Falcons tied the score with two second period goals,  Whited put Stout ahead within a minute after the Falcons tied the score, and Brossmann scored his first goal of the night with six minutes left in the second period for the 3-3 tie.

Stout outshot River Falls, 46-32.

The Blue Devils are idle until January 8 when they travel to Augsburg College.
