DULUTH, Minn. (November 13, 2009) - Special teams were the key tonight as UW-Stout and St. Scholastica played to a 4-4 tie Friday at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The two teams combined for six power play goals and one shorthanded goal throughout the evening and a wild second period that saw four goals scored three by Stout (2-2-1, 0-2-1).

The Saints (3-1-1, 2-0-1) took an early lead, scoring twice in the first period. Jeremy Dawes got a shorthanded goal three minutes into the contest and Chris Meagher picked up the first power play goal of the evening with two minutes left in the first period.

The second period, for the most pat, belonged to Stout. <dfn>Andy Sternberg</dfn> (Sr, Duluth, Minn) scored two goals in his hometown – the second time this season he has scored two goals in a game – getting the only even strength goal of the game just a minute into the period. Sternberg scored on the power play at 9:32 to open a brief scoring frenzy.

The Saints Austin Brown rapped in a power play goal at 11:43, but Stout’s <dfn>Joel Gaulrapp</dfn> (Sr, Owatonna, Minn) knotted the score at 3 apiece at 12:11.

St. Scholastica grabbed the lead back two minutes into the third period, again on a power play. <dfn>Scott Motz</dfn> (Sr, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored with seven minutes left in regulation to tie the score at 4-4.

Neither team recorded much of an attack in the overtime session, with St. Scholastica putting two shots on net, while Stout had one shot.

Stout’s <dfn>Tom Lescovich</dfn> (Fr, Clifton Park, NY) recorded 32 saves on the evening, while the Saints’ Brennan Poderzay (12) and Zach Kleiman (5) combined for 17 saves.

Andy Sternberg has a history of being a ‘team’ guy all the way back to his high school days in Duluth, MN. The 5’11 175lb senior will likely take on that roll again for his last season with the Blue Devils. Sternberg was his high school’s team captain and was named to the CCM All-Star team, if that weren’t enough, Sternberg also won the ‘We Not Me’ award.

After his high school days, Sternberg headed to the North American Hockey League (NAHL) where he played seven games for the Minnesota Blizzard in 2003-2004. The following season Sternberg found himself playing for the Springfield Spirit and finally the Wasilla Spirit in 2005-2006. During his last year of juniors, Sternberg notched 11G and 10A in 54 games.

Sternberg matches the philosophy of head coach Terry Watkins. Bring in good kids from good families and develop them into great hockey players. ’Bergy’ as he is better known around the Dunn Co. will be looked to for his leadership both on and off the ice. During the 2008-2009 season, Sternberg contributed 19pts including three on the power play and two shorties.
