The Cadets (2-1) scored three goals in the first period, then tagged on three quick goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period, chasing Blue Devil (4-3-2) starter <dfn>Tom Lescovich</dfn> (Fr, Clifton Park, NY), and took a 8-0 lead into the second break of the night.

The host Cadets added another goal in the final period before Stout got their only offensive output of the night late in the third period to avert the shutout when <dfn>Derek Hanson</dfn> (Sr, Bemidji, Minn) scored with five minutes left to play. The goal pulls Hanson to within one point Glenn LaChappelle as the all-time leading Stout points leader.

Norwich outshot Stout, 53-14, on the evening.

Stout will play Middlebury College, Saturday, Nov. 28 at 4 p.m. (ET) in the consolation game. Middlebury is the defending tournament champion. Norwich will play SUNY-Plattsburgh, which defeated Middlebury 3-1, in the championship game.

On the post for day 1 I forgot to mention a special thanks to the families that provided food for our trip. Also, another special thank you to Brian Stutz who showed up to wish us the best before hitting the road.

Day 2 of our cross country adventure started off around 6:30 for breakfast in the hotel lobby. It was a typical continental breakfast. At 7:15, we set off for SUNY-Cortland in Ithaca, NY where we would eventually practice. The bus ride seemed a bit less hectic than yesterday. Once again, most of the guys fell asleep for a short while. About an hour or so into the trip, we put In Rounders to start off the “movie day.” The guys were a bit more lively since we got a full night of sleep. The time seemed to go by quicker and eventually we rolled into the Cortland ice rink parking lot.

We had a good hour and 20 minute skate.

Part 2 of today’s journey included lots of hours spent on the computer by most of the team. From poker to Avalon, guys were just trying to kill time. Lescovich, Sam Carr, and I were enjoying the games from addictinggames.com, especially one titled, The Hardest Game Ever. The title speaks for itself. About a quarter of the way in, we put movie #2 on which happened to be Taken. Making our way through the long windy mountain roads, we eventually made it to the Capitol Plaza Hotel in downtown Montpelier.

We have to wake up at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow and have a jam packed schedule including our game at 7 p.m. ET.

UW-Stout has garnered success over the last three or four years, and other teams across the country are taking note. UW-Stout has been invited to participate in what many sports reporters call “the best tournament in Division III hockey.” This prestigious tournament, known as the PrimeLink Great Northern Shootout, is held annually over Thanksgiving weekend. What makes it so prestigious you ask?

The competitive atmosphere of the tournament and the quality of sportsmanship has remained a constant over the last ten years. This year will prove to be no different – sustaining its reputation as a highly energized college hockey event for fans and a quality measuring stick for the teams as they enter the season.

With the National Champion coming out of this tournament seven of the ten years – the tournament is truly a major college hockey attraction and a solid tradition in college hockey. — Courtesy of PrimeLinkShootout.com

UW-Stout will travel by bus to Norwich University in Norwich, VT for the holiday tournament. I’m sure to expect many fans & parents in tow for this wonderful event as Blue Devils fans travel well all over the country. What makes this year extra exciting is the host, Norwich University, is also coincidentally celebrating 100 years of college hockey at their institution.

All the games will be available by live webcast free of charge. UW-Stout will face-off in its first match-up against Norwich on Novermber 27th, 2009 at 7p.m. EST.

You can count on Stouthockey.com to bring you all the inside coverage including photos, video, live blogging on Twitter and player interviews from Vermont.
