Norwich Rolls Over Stout

nrw120NORTHFIELD, Vt (November 27, 2009) – Norwich University scored six goal over the first 30 minutes of the game and went on to defeat UW-Stout, 9-1, in the opening round of the PrimeLink Northern Shootout Friday.

The Cadets (2-1) scored three goals in the first period, then tagged on three quick goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period, chasing Blue Devil (4-3-2) starter Tom Lescovich (Fr, Clifton Park, NY), and took a 8-0 lead into the second break of the night.

The host Cadets added another goal in the final period before Stout got their only offensive output of the night late in the third period to avert the shutout when Derek Hanson (Sr, Bemidji, Minn) scored with five minutes left to play. The goal pulls Hanson to within one point Glenn LaChappelle as the all-time leading Stout points leader.

Norwich outshot Stout, 53-14, on the evening.

Stout will play Middlebury College, Saturday, Nov. 28 at 4 p.m. (ET) in the consolation game. Middlebury is the defending tournament champion. Norwich will play SUNY-Plattsburgh, which defeated Middlebury 3-1, in the championship game.

Mike Morgan Day 2 Blog!

On the post for day 1 I forgot to mention a special thanks to the families that provided food for our trip. Also, another special thank you to Brian Stutz who showed up to wish us the best before hitting the road.

Day 2 of our cross country adventure started off around 6:30 for breakfast in the hotel lobby. It was a typical continental breakfast. At 7:15, we set off for SUNY-Cortland in Ithaca, NY where we would eventually practice. The bus ride seemed a bit less hectic than yesterday.  Once again, most of the guys fell asleep for a short while. About an hour or so into the trip, we put In Rounders to start off the “movie day.” The guys were a bit more lively since we got a full night of sleep. The time seemed to go by quicker and eventually we rolled into the Cortland ice rink parking lot.

We had a good hour and 20 minute skate.

Part 2 of today’s journey included lots of hours spent on the computer by most of the team. From poker to Avalon, guys were just trying to kill time. Lescovich, Sam Carr, and I were enjoying the games from addictinggames.com, especially one titled, The Hardest Game Ever. The title speaks for itself. About a quarter of the way in, we put movie #2 on which happened to be Taken. Making our way through the long windy mountain roads, we eventually made it to the Capitol Plaza Hotel in downtown Montpelier.

We have to wake up at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow and have a jam packed schedule including our game at 7 p.m. ET.

Team Headed East For Thanksgiving

gaulrapp_primelinkNORTHFIELD, Vermont (November 24, 2009) – Even last year’s NCAA Division III national tournament championships round did not feature four of the top 10 nationally ranked teams.

UW-Stout will participate in the PrimeLink Northern Shootout in Northfield, Vt, where all four teams are ranked in the top 10. Stout (4-2-2) is ranked seventh, and will face host Norwich University (2-0-0) at 7 p.m. (ET), Friday, Nov. 27. Third-ranked SUNY-Plattsburgh (6-1-0) will meet ninth-ranked Middlebury College (1-0-1) earlier that day at 4 p.m. (ET).

The third place game will be Saturday, Nov. 28 at 4 p.m (ET) and the championship game will follow at 7 p.m. (ET).

The Shootout began in 1998 as an eastern school-only tournament. Beginning in 2006, a team from outside the immediate area has been invited to participate in the tournament. St. John’s was the first western team beginning in 2007. St. Thomas participated last year and Stout is the first NCHA team invited to the tournament. No western team has yet won the tournament. Middlebury won the Shootout last year, with a 3-2 win over Norwich.

The national champion has come out of the PrimeLink Shootout seven of the last 11 years.

All of the games will be available in a live video stream produced by students from the Center for Communication and Journalism at SUNY-Plattsburgh.

While he will not be broadcasting this weekend, Matt Kaskavitch, the voice of Blue Devil hockey, will be traveling with the team to Vermont. As usual, Kaskavitch will be providing up-to-the-minute information over Stouthockey.com and through the Twitter site.

Q&A With Brandon Larson (D)

larson1Brandon Larson is a local boy, a native of New Richmond, Wisconsin.  New Richmond is about 25 minutes west of Menomonie.  At 6″4 and 225lbs, Larson fits the bill well as an NCHA defenseman.  He played his junior hockey with the Northern Iowa Outlaws and the Alexandria Blizzard in the North American Hockey League.  In high school Larson was all-conference two years, first team all-state and his team’s high scorer.  Playing college hockey was a dream for Larson.  He is the first one in his family to attend a four-year university.  He has been receiving steady ice time this season after Bobby Kuehl got injured against SNC during opening weekend.

Brandon:  Boxers 100 %
Stouthockey.com – Speed boat or pontoon boat?
Brandon:  Speed boat, pontoons are boring

Stouthockey.com – When not playing hockey, what would we find you doing?

Brandon:  Probably relaxing in my bed, or building something from scratch with wood, nails and a hammer.

Stouthockey.com – Goals for the team this year?
Brandon:  Obviously make it to NY again, but just play like we all know how to play,  we all know we can do it.

#9 Blue Devils Hold Off Pointers 6-3

MENOMONIE (November 20, 2009) - UW-Stout jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but then had to hold off UW-Stevens Point in the third period to take a 6-3 win and claim their first conference win of the season.

Stout  (3-2-2, 1-2-2 NCHA, 1-0-0 WIAC) opened the game with three goals in the first period, allowing one, then added another to take a big lead.

But the Pointers (2-6-0, 0-5-0, 0-1-0) took advantage of Stout miscues in the final period.

Stout’s Andy Sternberg (Sr, Duluth, Minn) opened the period by scoring a goal just after the Blue Devils killed a power play opportunity six minutes into the period.

Six minutes later, Nick Polaski scored on a delayed penalty to move the score to 5-2. Three minutes later, the Pointers’ Jon Madden scored on the power play.

Stevens Point pulled their goal early, and Stout could not get off a good shot at the empty net. The Blue Devils finally iced the game and took advantage of the empty net when Sam Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) launched a shot from the opposite blue line that made a trip into the net.

Derek Hanson (Sr, Bemidji, Minn) opened the scoring in the game, getting a breakaway goal four minutes into the game. The Pointers’ Donnie Hallmark got an equalizer three minutes later, Stout added two more goal in the period, one by Eric Scovill (Jr, Peoria, Ill) and another by Garrett Grimstad (Fr, Rochester, Minn). Scott Motz (Sr, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored in the second for Stout.

Tom Lescovich (Fr, Clifton Park, NY) turned away 25 shots for Stout, while Tom Speer had 14 saves for Stevens Point.

The teams will meet again Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.

UW-Stout’s student section, better known as the Devils’ Advocates issued a ‘call-out’ to UW-SP’s student fans last week via an online video.  UW-Stevens Point’s students have not responded officially, but they were invited to come to the Dunn Co. this weekend to battle for student section supremacy.

“Get your popcorn ready,” said Brian Stutz, a UW-Stout senior and DA leader. “because the Dunn Co. is gonna be cooking” he added.

Stout’s OT Win Overturned

DULUTH, Minn (November 14, 2009) – For the second straight night, UW-Stout and St. Scholastica played to a tie, this time a 1-1 decision at Mars Lakeview Arena Saturday night.

The Saints (3-1-2, 2-0-2 NCHA) got on the board first only seconds after Stout (2-2-2, 2-0-2 NCHA) took their third penalty of the first period. St. Scholastica’s Jeff Gagnon scored with only eight ticks left on the first period clock just seven seconds after Stout drew a penalty for a Saints’ power play goal.

The Blue Devils’ reciprocated midway through the second period with the same type of experience. Sam Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn) scored his first collegiate goal on the power play only six seconds after St. Scholastica drew a penalty, with the time of goal at 11:01. Andy Sternberg (Sr, Duluth, Minn) assisted on the play. Neither team could score after that.

Stout was 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Saints were 1-for-7. Shots were dead-even as both teams put 39 shots on net with Stout goaltender Tom Lescovich (Fr, Clifton Park, NY) and Saints goalie Zach Kleiman each stopping 38 shots.

The teams played to a 4-4 draw on Friday and six of the eight goals scored were power play goals.

Stout will host UW-Stevens Point, Friday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and again Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m.

Controversial Call

With less than minute to go in OT, Derek Hanson tallied a goal that was later retracted.  The goal was for man in the crease on Joel Gaulrapp (#9) who you see getting tangled with goaltender.  The video shows Kleiman of CSS tripping Joel Gaulrapp outside the crease, then recovers to his feet and is cleanly beat by Derek Hanson for the OT win.  Goal or no goal?  You be the judge.

Blue Devils Light Up Cardinals

DSC_0148MENOMONIE (November 6, 2009) – UW-Stout rediscovered their offense as the Blue Devils cruised past St. Mary’s, 6-1, in a non-conference contest Friday night at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

Andy Sternberg (Sr, Duluth, Minn) scored two goals, a short-handed and a power goal, and Branden Gay (Jr, Calgary, Alberta) had four assists to lead the power surge.

The Blue Devils (1-2-0) opened the game when Garrett Grimstad (Fr, Rochester, MInn) scored his first collegiate goal 38 seconds into the contest. The rest of the first period was scoreless as St. Mary’s outshot the Blue Devils, 9-8, in the stanza.

But Stout blew the cap off the net in the second period, scoring four goals. Sternberg scored shorthanded 3:49 into the period. Scott Motz (Sr, Lake Elmo, Minn) scored at 9:10, before Sternberg scored on the power play at 12:46. Joel Gaulrapp (Sr, Owatonna, Minn) closed out the scoring in the second with a goal at 17:23.

The Blue Devils added a second play goal 50 seconds into the third period when Robert Carr (Jr, Roseau, Minn) took a pass from his brother Sam Carr (Fr, Roseau, Minn). St. Mary’s (0-3-0) got on the board with less then two minutes left in the game by Morgan Shepherd.

Tom Lescovich (Fr, Clifton Park, NY) picked up the win with two periods of work and recorded 15 saves. Mike Morgan (So, Northfield, Minn) worked the third period for five saves.

Stout will host St. Thomas, Saturday, Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m.
